Sawnie Morris

because they are wild   they startle

the river right outside the door    sultry   muddy

like an earless lizard   my wedding ring   its wet self

and the hermit thrush I once was   flushed outward

willows in shallows we waded

you and I a molecule   from somewhere   a tear

the river doubles back on itself

                                                    inside itself

plastic nudged into hair grass   owl sounds

and then       our chatter
