Apocryphon of Roots

i. anatomy

you stretch forth a root into the darkness        / open the light
              and ride through it /        with you sway the trees / desire
a moving target      / a road      / a rod                cone-tipped / enrobed
        in darkness

ii. architecture

wider than the canopy of me        / fingers
              threading through        the earth /        dirt
is all around       / and dark
          / tilled by the blind

                                   a path unpaved make path / make way

iii. growth

the creaking of the trees
              from seed / is sown

                                                      I’ll bring you water / I’ll bring you
                                            flowering moss /

you burrow-climb
                    the night / divide

iv. regulation

I want to ask about the rain        / nimble-fingered
              and without        / aim xxx/ one thing
blossoms        / another                             / falls away

          / tap / tap tap tap
I ask

v. specialization

you who rise
                         out / originate
from stem        / from leaf            from /

        / who clover
                    / who strawberry / who willow
willow me /

anchor and reach / heavily-branched /
                    / thicken

               above ground / breathe dew
or store       / short-lived though you may be / but fine

               hold close /
                             beneath the soil
                                                               / swell
                                                                                            / salt
               is no emblem of the soul      / nor stolon

shade leaves /
                       / pickleweed

vi. depth

in such darkness        / I cannot read your eyes
                           and I don’t know /        what storm I’m from

the world is wrapped in flame
                           / and there is drumming        / in the trees
                                                                                                                               given pattern
                                                                                                                               / given form
every day another / doorway
             I hunger for
                           / I cannot name
