Earthshine

A luminous
river dwindles
into a city.

It thins to spring,
to creek, to slough.
The narrative

shifts away
from the water.
Figures line

banks by night.
By day, shoes
line the banks.

The river will never
mention this again.
A genius

at disappearance,
it takes everything
out to sea.
