The Silent Scream

How gentle

the child, his body

rocking in the surf.

How gentle, his father’s

keening.

How gentle he lifts

his son

from the ocean.

This poem is from a gripping picture taken by Nilufer Demir who discovered the child after the boat he and other refugees were in, capsized off the coast of Turkey.
